Search Engine Optimization and blogging
Search Engine Optimization is taken care of to a certain extent in blogs as these are rich in text and links, are updated frequently and tend to eliminate such HTML code that can pose any sort of problem. Nevertheless, blogs need to be optimized for search engine indexing. Besides that, search engine optimization for blogging is quite similar to that of normal web pages. At the same time, there are certain steps in Search Engine Optimization of blogs that are different from that of web pages.
Here are some points that can be used for Search Engine Optimization of blogs:
1. Optimum usage of keywords: Regardless of the fact that whether one has purchased a separate domain for blogging or used services of a blogging service, the usage of keywords needs to be optimum. Keywords have to be used in blog URL, its title and anchor text of the links. Usage of keywords at these places is explained here: URL: The keyword phrase needs to be used in URL of the blog. For example, if your blog has anything to do with hosting, this word needs to be used once in the URL. Your own domain name will be good for branding purposes, and more so in case you are blogging for commercial purposes. For example, a blog titled 'MyBlog' is going to have a better impact than 'XYZ.MyBlog' or 'MyBlog.ABC'.
Blog header tags: Blog headers and other titles in your blogs need to have the keyword phrase. A number of smart blogging tools are available that can take care of most of such points. For example, a page will be automatically created by Google owned Blogger and will save it as a HTML file with relevant name that is same as your blog title. Other blogging software tools such as Wordpress or Movable Type need execution of certain commands so as to enable saving title in the form of a permalink.
Keywords in body: While blogging it is very important that you make optimum usage of keywords in the main text of your blog as well. If you have some secondary keywords, do use them with caution as over usage can earn you a dubious label of a black hat search engine optimizer. This wouldn't be a good way to begin blogging as your blog can be banned by search engines. Worse still, you can end up getting the IP banned which means other websites and blogs sharing that IP get banned as well.
2. Blog Directories: Make it a point that after you have finished blogging, you should submit the URL of your blog with Blog Search Engines and Directories. You can submit your comments to other blogs as well which can prompt others to visit your blog in return.
3. Update your blog regularly so that visitors to your blog have something fresh to read every time they visit your blog. Stale content can be the biggest turn off for your visitors and jeopardize the prospects of your blog.
