Certain terms associated with blogging

Blogging has evolved very rapidly in past few years and many terms happen to be associated with it today. Some of the terms related with blogging are discussed here like a blog about cars.

  • Audio blog: Such a blog is used by bloggers to create post music files, mostly in MP3 format, so that others can access and download them. An audio blog can be used to post classic music files which are otherwise difficult to find. Generally, audio blogs are associated with specific genres such as rock, classical etc. These types of blogs may attract copyright infringement cases against them from the music companies .
  • Blog carnival: A blog carnival refers to a blog article which is composed of links to several other articles related to a certain topic. It is something similar to a magazine as it is related to a specific topic and updated regularly. The author may collect blog posts from other bloggers who might be interesting in sharing their content. Blog carnivals are hosted in turn by guest bloggers. In this way, a blog carnival travels from one blog to another.
  • Blogging client: A blogging client is a software tool which helps bloggers to post and edit their blogs without launching a web browser. Such a blogging client has certain tools and applications which help in editing or spell check of the content to be posted on a blog. Some of such software tools can be downloaded from the Internet freely while others need to be purchased from their owners.
  • Fisking: Fisking refers to point by point rebuttal of an existing blog highlighting the errors or disputes in a blog. This term has originated from criticism of articles of Robert Fisk, a prominent journalist with Sunday Independent, whose articles face constant criticism from everybody.
  • Feed: A feed is used to collect recently updated content. Users can subscribe to a feed so as to receive an alert whenever a blog is updated by a blogger. It is known by names such as web feed, syndicated feed or a news feed. Email address needs not to be disclosed by users who wish to subscribe to a feed thereby preventing them from attacks such as email spam, viruses or phishing. In case they want to stop receiving alerts, all they need to do is to remove the feed. Popular feed formats include RSS and Atom.
  • Phloging: Phloging or photo blogging refers to sharing photographs in a blog. This type of blogging focuses on photographs as opposed to regular blogs that predominantly focus on text. Photo blogs can be hosted either on individual websites, platforms that are dedicated to photo blogging such as Flickr or using blogging services such as Blogger.
  • Spam blog: A spam blog or splog refers to such a blog which has no informative value for the visitors. It is created mainly for enhancing SEO rankings of other websites in a syndicate or for promotion of affiliates. A splog differs from spam in blogs as the latter focuses on posting of random comments in blogs of other users.
